The Miami Dolphins have officially decided to part ways with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, bringing an end to his six-year stint with the franchise in a surprising offseason move. The decision, announced on Monday, signals a major shift in direction for the team as it looks to rebuild ahead of the 2026 NFL season.
According to reports, the Dolphins will designate Tagovailoa’s release as a post-June 1 cut, allowing the team to spread a massive $99 million dead cap hit over two seasons — about $67.4 million in 2026 and $31.8 million in 2027. The figure is expected to be one of the largest dead-cap hits in NFL history.
Tagovailoa, who was selected fifth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, initially arrived in Miami as the franchise’s long-term quarterback. He showed flashes of brilliance during his time with the team, including a Pro Bowl appearance and leading the league in passing yards during the 2023 season.
However, his tenure in Miami became increasingly turbulent over the last two seasons. The 2025 campaign saw the Dolphins struggle, finishing outside playoff contention while Tagovailoa posted 20 touchdowns and 15 interceptions with a 6-8 record as a starter.
In a statement, Dolphins management thanked the quarterback for his contributions to the franchise and the community while confirming the team’s intention to move in a different direction at the position. The move comes as Miami begins reshaping its roster and exploring new options at quarterback heading into the upcoming season.
Tagovailoa leaves the Dolphins after compiling 18,166 passing yards and 120 touchdowns during his time with the team.
Now a free agent, the 27-year-old quarterback is expected to attract interest from several NFL teams looking for an experienced signal-caller. Potential landing spots mentioned by analysts include the Atlanta Falcons, Minnesota Vikings, and Las Vegas Raiders, though nothing has been confirmed yet.
With Tagovailoa’s exit, the Dolphins enter a new chapter, as the franchise looks to stabilize its quarterback position and rebuild a roster capable of competing in the AFC once again.
